Think you can’t draw? This class is for you.

In this dynamic and empowering four-day workshop, acclaimed artist Kelly Crosser Alge will guide you through the process of using glass powders to draw richly expressive, two-dimensional imagery in kiln-formed glass. Blending elements of fine art and fine craft, this workshop redefines what it means to "draw"—inviting you to explore line, contrast, gesture, emotion, and storytelling through the lens of glass.

You'll learn how to use simple tools, improvisational techniques, and even some “tricks of the trade” to create powerful visual compositions—no drawing experience required. Whether your inspiration is abstract or narrative, this class will help you develop the confidence and technical foundation to translate your ideas into glass.

In addition to sgraffito drawing, Kelly will cover a wide range of supporting techniques and materials, including:

  • Kiln-formed cane and murrini
  • Collaged part sheets for drawing
  • Reactive glass effects
  • Color strategies and volume control
  • Custom tool-making
  • Firing schedules and finishing techniques

By the end of the workshop, you’ll not only walk away with new work, but also a deeper understanding of how to “see” as an artist, how to evoke emotion through material, and how to tell compelling visual stories with glass.

All materials included. Some fusing experience is helpful, but not required.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Kelly Crosser Alge has been working with kiln-formed glass since 1995, building a career through relentless experimentation, curiosity, and a deep passion for artistic expression. Her work is a vibrant blend of techniques drawn from collage, printmaking, sculpture, and photography—all synthesized through the transformative medium of glass. In 2017, she returned to complete her BFA in glass and metalsmithing, adding formal structure to an already rich and innovative studio practice. Today, Kelly teaches across the U.S. and abroad, sharing her distinctive approach to glass and helping students unlock their creative potential.

"Glass has gripped me from day one. In its many forms, glass is the one medium that has allowed me to freely create; using combinations of art techniques I love from other media. Collage, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, painting, photography, and design... all come together with glass and heat as common ground."
