11/01-05 Modular Making: An Explosion of Possibility, with Georgia Redpath
November 1-5, 2025. 10am-5pm, with a lunch break from 1pm-2pm daily.
Explore the versatility of kiln casting through a modular approach, where small, repeatable units combine to create larger, unique forms. In this workshop, you’ll learn how modular parts can be arranged in countless ways, enabling the creation of multiple distinct pieces from a single set of components—an efficient method that maximizes materials, time, and creativity.
Throughout the course, you’ll master basic model and mold-making techniques for relief casting in glass. Starting with paper and cardboard, we’ll craft a series of small relief collage blocks, which will then be used to create silicone molds and plaster investment molds for the final kiln casting. Three different projects will showcase how modular elements can be introduced at each stage of this process.
While the instructor’s approach to collage blocks emphasizes geometric designs, with pre-cut shapes and templates available, participants are encouraged to explore organic patterns, pictorial elements, or abstract textures as well. Each project is compact, enabling multiple firings within the workshop timeframe. Expect to complete two or three castings using standard billet glass, with demonstrations on creating custom, multi-colored billets for future work. Additionally, you’ll learn advanced techniques for further developing pieces using your modular molds.
Unleash your creativity by building a new family of modular molds and discover endless possibilities for future casting projects.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Georgia is a glass artist based in Stourbridge, UK—a town with a rich, 400-year glassmaking history.
