2027: 01/08-01/10 Fritwork, with Kate Clements
January 8-10, 2027. 10am-5pm daily.
In this workshop students will explore creating imagery with frit, often considered an accessory glass, and make it the centerpiece of the work. We will work with simple tools to create complex patterns and images. Experimenting with different temperatures in the kiln, students will learn how to create a range of textures within a work to create complex imagery and capture the gesture of the hand. We will play with color to create form and light and shadow to create depth. Demonstrations and discussions will show how to push the boundaries of fragility and the potential of material transformation. Students should bring reference images to translate into glass, a sketch book, and a tracing paper pad.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Kate Clements is a glass artist whose practice spans painting, sculpture, and installation. Working with frit, a type of crushed glass, she carefully places the loose granules onto kiln shelves in a process akin to monk sand drawing. The wafer-thin panels reference naturalistic designs and floral motifs that she uses to explore ideas of beauty, taste, and impermanence.
Clements received her MFA in Glass from Tyler School of Art & Architecture in Philadelphia and her BFA in Painting and Art History from the Kansas City Art Institute. Her work has been exhibited nationally and abroad, including at the Arkansas Museum of Fine Art, Bellevue Arts Museum, Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, Nelson-Atkins Museum, S12 Galleri (Norway), Uprise Art (NYC), and UrbanGlass (NYC). She has been awarded residencies at Studios Inc and the Charlotte Street Foundation in Kansas City, the Museum of Arts & Design in NYC, Pilchuck Glass School, and S12 Galleri in Bergen, Norway. Most recently she was awarded third place for the Virginia A Groot Grant to pursue her project Chrysalis.
