Step into the woods and discover a unique approach to creating depth, atmosphere, and detail in fused glass. In this immersive workshop, students will design and construct a layered woodland landscape using multiple sheets of glass, carefully cut and assembled to create the illusion of a richly detailed forest scene.

Alice will guide students through her distinctive "glass puzzle" construction method, demonstrating how layering, color selection, and thoughtful composition can transform simple shapes into complex and visually engaging landscapes. Along the way, students will explore the use of transparent, opalescent, streaky, and specialty glasses, as well as powders, frit, confetti, and metallic accents to create depth, texture, and visual interest.

Participants will develop custom color studies and value scales, learn techniques for incorporating powders between layers, and explore methods for enhancing finished work with enamel details, gold luster, and coldworking techniques. The workshop will also examine creative ways to repurpose offcuts and remnants, turning unexpected results into new artistic opportunities.

This workshop is best suited for students who are comfortable cutting glass and have prior experience with basic fused glass processes. By the end of the class, each student will have created an original forest-inspired glass artwork while gaining a deeper understanding of layered glass construction, color development, and surface enhancement techniques.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Alice Benvie-Gebhart holds bachelor's and master's degrees in art education, with concentrations in painting and printmaking. After many years as both an educator and painter, she discovered kiln-formed glass and found a medium that perfectly combined her love of color, composition, and landscape.

Today, Alice works as a full-time professional fused glass artist and is best known for her vibrant layered landscapes inspired by the natural beauty of New England. Her work is represented by galleries across the United States and is recognized for its rich color, depth, and distinctive sense of place.

Based at Heritage Gifts & Glass Studio in East Greenwich, Rhode Island, Alice creates, exhibits, and teaches while continuing to explore the artistic possibilities of glass. She regularly shares her techniques with students in her home studio and at workshops throughout the United States and abroad.
