Glass is perhaps the ultimate material with which to create light-filled, expressive paintings. Even if you are not a painter, you can learn how to use glass in its many forms to create organic shapes, strokes, and textures, combined with traditional glass paints to create images of great beauty. This workshop is not about rendering something perfectly, but about exploring what glass can do if we “provoke” it in certain ways. Students will learn to use enamels, sheet glass, frit, and accessory glasses as well as their own custom “premade material” to build images of any style.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Tim Carey is a painter turned glass artist. He is the former Creative Director of The Judson Studios and currently runs Tim Carey Studio LLC out of Los Angeles, Ca. Tim’s goal is to bring image making in glass to the forefront in all areas of both private and public art. During the making of “The Resurrection Window” in Kansas Tim sought out the expertise of Narcissus Quagliata, and together they dove deep into the possibilities and potential of kiln formed glass as a material for expressive image making. Tim seeks to push this medium not only in his work but though the education of those currently working in glass as well as other media. Tim has taught at Bullseye Glass, Pacific Art Glass, The American Glass Guild and Stained Glass Association workshops as well as at the Getty Museum in Los Angeles. Tim also has taught privately and given lectures at schools and conferences around the country.
